When you think of places where food is grown, a hot, dry desert isn’t the first place that comes to mind. However, cities like Dubai have shown that it’s possible to grow food even in tough conditions. Dubai is leading the way in producing fresh, locally-grown food for its millions of residents. They use advanced farming techniques that save water and make the most of their harsh environment. For example, they grow tasty tomatoes with only a quarter of the water used by regular farms and even grow quinoa right in the desert.
Dubai’s success comes from a combination of its beautiful skyline and some of the smartest minds in the world. Technology is transforming farming, and innovative ideas are helping businesses in Dubai find new ways to grow local vegetables.
To further boost food production, Dubai has launched the Food Tech Valley project. This project aims to triple the UAE’s food production and make it a global leader in the industry. Located in Warsan, this 18 million square foot area showcases high-tech, sustainable farming methods like vertical farming, cellular agriculture, and hydroponics. The city will produce over 300 types of crops using these modern techniques.
Vertical farming involves growing crops in stacked layers instead of traditional horizontal rows. This method saves space and increases crop yield per square foot. Badia Farms was the first to set up a vertical farm in Dubai, growing microgreens and herbs for local restaurants in an 8,500 square foot warehouse. Their goal is to bring fresh produce from farm to table and promote Dubai as a top producer of fruits and vegetables.
Dubai Industrial City hosts Badia Farms’ new large-scale high-tech vertical farm. Additionally, Emirates Flight Catering and Crop One, a leading vertical farm operator from the US, are investing $40 million to build the world’s largest vertical farming facility near Al Maktoum International Airport.
